Carbon Offset with Greenfleet
What will the planet look like for our grandchildren and great grandchildren?
Without sounding alarmist, the future could be bleak unless we change things soon.
Todays discussion of "how will they ever be able to buy a house?" could well be replaced by "how will they survive the next flood?" and "can they afford to eat?".
We all want to do our bit for the environment.
Recycling bottles and cans, choosing recycled paper and remembering to take re-usable shopping bags have all become a way of life.
What about the environmental impact of our funerals?
In recent times we've been finding more families are opting for cremation when offered the choice... burial or cremation?
It is an increasingly important consideration.
Current estimates show that a cremation emits between 40kg to 160kg of carbon to the atmosphere.
The 2 immediate and visible variables in this calculation are :
- the size of the person for cremation
- the type of coffin being used
Other variables which are less visible but equally important :
- shipping and delivery of the coffin
- timber used for the coffin (sustainable or old growth timber)
- cremation energy usage (fossil fuelled or renewable)
At Northern Beaches Funerals have appointed Greenfleet to offset the carbon emission of every cremation we complete.
Greenfleet run offset programs via the regeneration of native forest in Australia and New Zealand.
The Northern Beaches Funerals contribution for each cremation matches the carbon total of 250kg for each cremation we manage.
We've selected to offset 250kg to be sure the immediate variables are covered aswell as the less visible ones.
It is our hope that one day carbon offset will be standard practice for every crematorium - not only in Australia but throughout the world.
Until such a time, Northern Beaches Funerals will take the initiative to ensure that a cremation with us won't contribute to the climate crisis.
