Natural Burial Ground

Here on the Northern Beaches, we are very fortunate to have numerous historical cemeteries such as Manly Cemetery, 1865 and Mona Vale Cemetery, 1905) and the more recent addition of Frenchs Forest Bushland Cemetery (1937).

The burial sites at Frenchs Forest are for natural burial in the protected green space named Nyarawan (meaning Far Away).

A natural burial is the method of returning a body as naturally as possible back to the earth.

The deceased person is placed in a 100% biodegradable coffin which is set in the grave and covered with the original soil to allow the body to decompose naturally.

All coffins are made from natural materials (cardboard, wicker, banana leaf or natural timber) and are lined with unbleached cotton (calico).

Natural Burials are a great way to offer a loved one an environmentally conscious way to go back with the earth, by significantly reducing the energy and resource consumption of either cremation or traditional burial.

The intent is for graves to blend into the natural surroundings, creating a long term protected habitat for native flora and fauna.

Instead of individual headstones, there is a central reference point with the names and locations of those interred there.

In Frenchs Forest, the central reference is mounted on a sculptural portion of Sydney Sandstone.  Other natural burial grounds have different methods of marking the location of each gravesite.

Every person is unique. Every family is different.
With us, every Funeral is Individual.
